Using indigo is not just natural, safer alternative to chemical hair dyes but also has health benefits. It is a natural astringent and antiseptic and fights infections.
Indigo is a sub-tropical shrub 1 to 2 meters tall that possesses the woad pigment in its leaves and is very popular as a blue vegetable dye for cloth. Indigo blue dye is regarded as safe for contact with skin. The FDA also permits Indigo for inclusion in cosmetics and soaps.
To use: Mix with water to create a paste (usually mixed with previously soaked henna at this point) and use as soon as possible as Indigo releases its colour immediately and is active only for about an hour. Apply to hair and leave for at least an hour (and up to 8 hours if mixed with henna). Rinse thoroughly.
Warning: Indigo, used on its own, can make light coloured hair green or blue.
